Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink takes place during the time of the Civil War. Around this time many brave families were moving westward to settle new territory.

What were the physical features of the land? How did these families, settling in new territory, create conflict? What was the role of women and children in the Western movement? What were the hardships of moving west?
